Comfort Supply joins dealer Bill Stalker to celebrate the opening of the Isaac Litton High School Alumni Association

Last Saturday, members of the Isaac Litton High School Alumni Association came together to celebrate and dedicate the new Isaac Litton Alumni Center and Gymnasium. Bill Stalker, class of 1970 and owner of Trinity Construction in Mt. Juliet, played a large role in the reconstruction of the building. As one of Comfort Supply’s trusted dealers, we were on hand to support and celebrate with Bill. As were Mayor Karl Dean, Congressman Jim Cooper and House Speaker Beth Harwell, who joined the alumni association board members for the ribbon cutting.

Bill led the fundraising and renovation project for the new center and gym, helping to raise $1.7 million. Comfort Supply was honored to provide the HVAC equipment for the facilities and to support the rebuilding of this historic, community building.

The renovation of the center also made it possible for the nonprofit, afterschool program Backfield in Motion (BIM) to move its headquarters to Isaac Litton. BIM combines academics and athletics to help Nashville inner-city boys reach their highest potential. It’s with thanks to Bill and the rest of the alumni association that this building can now serve as a safe place for local children to participate in supervised, recreational programs.

We were thrilled to be able to help and participate in this great cause and event. We wholeheartedly congratulate Bill in fostering the renovation, and seeing this project through from start to finish.

Join Us in Welcoming Mel McNeer Our New Geo Auditor

We are happy to announce that energy and geothermal expert Mel McNeer has joined Comfort Supply.

Mel will lead our geothermal efforts, getting the word out about new geothermal technologies and products and maintaining an inventory of geothermal equipment to support dealers. He will work out of our Knoxville location at 608 Business Park Lane. There’s a potentially large market for geothermal supplies in Knoxville, which is only going to continue to grow as the housing market comes back.

Mel most recently worked for East Coast Metals as a geothermal sales engineer. He also has a background in manufacturing management.

Here at Comfort Supply, we think it's important to find ways to continue promoting and educating vendors about geothermal, as it’s one of the primary industries still benefiting from government rebates and incentives. Mel in his new position will help us spearhead this initiative.

McNeer has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from West Virginia Institute of Technology (now part of West Virginia University). He also has an MBA from Purdue University.

Thanks Mel, and welcome to Comfort Supply.

G3: The World's First Straight-Through Geothermal Heat Pump

We are proud to announce the addition of the G3 modular geothermal system to our product line. Created by GeoMaster, LLC and part of GeoExcel’s geothermal systems, G3 is the world’s first straight-through, multi-position modular geothermal heat pump.

G3 is field adaptable into seven configurations: left, right, up, down, split, horizontal and straight-through. Since the product can be configured onsite, it fits many applications where typical geothermal heat pumps would not.

The system is very flexible and easy to transport. This lets contractors carry a minimum number of products to service all customers. It eliminates unnecessary stocking of equipment and is great for the retrofit market.

It’s a three-piece unit, with fan, compressor and A-Coil sections that have multiple air flow configurations. The G3 is the only product in the market with a straight-through option.

The system comes in three-, four- and five-ton units, and is outfitted with ECM2 fan motors, a Copeland UltraTech compressor and circuit boards with diagnostics. “The compressor is in the middle of the unit as opposed to the bottom, which makes extremely quiet compared to traditional units,” Hammond said.

The product is ARI rated and Energy Star endorsed. It is manufactured by Bard Manufacturing Company in Bryan, Ohio. To learn more, contact your Comfort Supply sales rep.

Saving Energy with the Black Hawk Power House

Energy costs are something we’re all thinking about these days. Whether it’s astronomical prices at the pump or the cost of cooling homes during a sweltering Tennessee summer, businesses and homeowners alike seek ways to reduce usage and save money. That’s why at Comfort Supply, we’re excited about the amazing Black Hawk Power House.

The Power House power conditioning system, by Black Hawk Energy Products, installs on a building's electrical system. The small box boosts, balances and regulates voltage rates during all phases of electrical consumption. It gives home and business owners an opportunity to reduce energy and maintenance costs by reclaiming electricity normally lost to the ground.

The Black Hawk Power House has been wildly popular among our customers. And why not? It’s a safe, efficient way to cut energy costs for homes and businesses.

Here’s how the Power House works: The voltage of electrical current drawn into a building ebbs and flows, depending on the demand on the grid. When the voltage spikes, appliances will send the excess electricity through a ground wire dispersing it to the earth. When voltage is low, appliances struggle to pull enough power to do their jobs. The Power House captures voltage that would normally go to ground and recycles it into the building's electrical system. When voltage fluctuates, the flow into the building remains more level. The result is a reduction in kilowatt consumption, appliances that run at peak efficiency, reduced maintenance costs and reduced peak demand loads. All of which leads to lower energy bills.

Aside from the obvious advantages of lower electricity bills, customers also appreciate the green angle. Using power more efficiently and not losing so much to a ground wire means equipment and appliances last longer with lower maintenance costs. It also lowers peak demand on available energy and helps entire communities have a more stable power grid.

In addition to the obvious savings, the Power House increases the capacity of a building's electrical panel by allowing it to run cooler and protects all equipment from basic electrical surges. The unit, which weighs about 50 pounds can be installed nearly anywhere because it runs cool and requires no special ventilation.

The Power House must be installed by a licensed electrician and is available in both residential and commercial voltages.  Learn more at BlackHawkEnergySaver.com today.

Honeywell's RedLINK Internet Gateway

Honeywell’s RedLINK Internet Gateway: Controlling Comfort on the Go

When summer heat hits and cooling bills start to rise, many homes and businesses tend to sacrifice comfort in order to lower costs. Here at Comfort Supply, we help our customers (who help their customers) control the climate and reduce energy costs with Honeywell’s RedLINK Internet Gateway, or RIG.

Honeywell Total Connect comfort services connect HVAC systems to the Internet, allowing users to monitor and adjust temperatures with an iPhone, iPad or PC via Honeywell’s RedLINK Internet Gateway.

I use this app on my iPhone and iPad to control the temperature in my home. On especially cold mornings this past winter, I was able to stay warm in bed without getting up to adjust the thermostat – I simply reached for my iPhone from the nightstand and used Honeywell’s RIG to increase the heat before I got out of bed. Now that spring has arrived and temperatures are rising again, I can monitor and adjust my home’s temperature on the go, all from my mobile devices. With this app, I can save money and energy by not cooling the house when no one is home.

With Honeywell’s RIG, I can make adjustments to my home’s temperature in the office, at lunch, and even in traffic. It used to take a while for things to get comfortable when I reset the temperature after getting home, but with the Honeywell RIG I can make adjustments ahead of time, and my house feels great as soon as I walk in the door - without the expense of heating or air conditioning my house all day to keep it at a comfortable temperature.

In addition to adjusting temperature, Honeywell’s RIG mobile app lets me set up alerts to notify me when temperature or humidity reaches pre-set levels.

Honeywell Total Connect comfort services offers the app free of charge, with no monthly fees.

Ask one of our Comfort Supply sales team about it and check it out for yourself!

HVAC Web Apps and the 21st Century Tool Belt

Comfort Supply has enjoyed sharing a new toolset to make life easier for HVAC industry professionals: HVAC Web Apps. We've teamed up with KB Watson Enterprises to provide contractors with a suite of cloud-based calculators.  These tools are designed to simplify the most common tasks performed at worksites by HVAC comfort advisors, system designers, installers and service technicians.

The platform of cloud-based Web apps – including residential load calculation, residential equipment selection, residential duct design and more – runs on any device with a Web browser. Even better, you don't have to have an iPhone or an iPad to use it. Any mobile device with an Internet connection will do.

Watching the trend of fewer and fewer technicians carrying bulky laptops to worksites has been a sign of the times in our industry. Devices such as iPhones, Android smart phones and tablets have become tools on the HVAC technician’s belt.

We're mindful of that at Comfort Supply, and we've sought to evolve with new technologies like the iPad and HVAC Web Apps. We're a better, more efficient company for it.

Our own sales pro Wayne Dube had this to say about his experience with the apps:

“The best thing about the platform is that it combines a bunch of tools in one location. You don’t have to have a refrigerant chart or a pipe size chart, for example, when you’re at a worksite. Calculations that used to take contractors up to an hour to compute now take about a minute. It’s a great training tool for the industry and the next step for bringing our industry into the IT age."

We look forward to hearing from our customers about their experiences with HVAC Web Apps.

A beta test site for HVAC Web Apps is live at www.hvacwebapps.com

A Look Back at 2011

It’s hard to believe that we opened two new locations last year, for a total of six stores throughout Tennessee — let’s just say that 2011 was a year of tremendous growth for us — and more growth is expected this year.

We added a Knoxville location in April, and our 14,000-square-foot store stocks our trademark selection of quality Ruud residential and commercial products. Last month we added a location in Chattanooga. As our first Ruud PROSTOCK store, the 20,000-square-foot location includes a 3,000-square-foot showroom.

We also took advantage of technology in 2011 by outfitting our sales reps with iPads. Now our reps have instant access, wherever they are, to important product information and other tools that allow them to better serve our customers. We also recently launched HVAC Web Apps, a platform of cloud-based calculator applications designed to simplify the most common tasks performed by a host of workers in the HVAC industry.

We have some ambitious things planned for the coming year. Our Web store goes live this month, and it will provide our customers an e-commerce solution for purchasing the HVAC materials and select parts that we carry.

This year we took huge strides as both a company and a team, all to better serve the needs of the 21st Century HVAC contractor, and I fully expect 2012 to be even better.
